For nearly a decade, Jennifer and David Keates have been bringing music, laughter and connection to the Outlook community through their much loved U-Bute Uke Group. What began as a simple idea has grown into a vibrant group that now brings together more than 40 members each week for a joyful strum and singalong.
Jennifer first arrived at Outlook Community Centre in Pakenham in 2017 with her trademark energy, enthusiasm and a bejewelled ukulele in hand. She had always wanted to play music, despite having no musical background, and chose the ukulele because it was simple, accessible and something anyone could learn. With that spirit, the U-Bute Uke Group was born.
Today the group includes members aged from their 50s through to their late 80s. Jennifer leads the sessions each week, simplifying songs into a few easy chords so everyone can join in. Her philosophy is clear. Focus on fun, progress and participation rather than perfection. The result is a welcoming and supportive space where people feel comfortable giving it a go, sharing a laugh and building friendships.
Jennifer’s positive outlook on ageing is infectious. She encourages members to keep their minds active, their bodies moving and their spirits high. The group has become far more than a music class. For many members it is a place of belonging, connection and support. Some have shared that joining the group helped them find confidence, step outside their comfort zones and feel less isolated.
David has been a wonderful partner in the journey, helping support the group and performances while sharing Jennifer’s passion for community music. Together they have helped the group perform at numerous community events, clubs and organisations both locally and further afield, spreading joy wherever they go.
Even during COVID lockdowns, Jennifer made sure the music didn’t stop. She created YouTube videos and kept members connected through regular updates so they could continue learning and playing from home.
After nine years, the U-Bute Uke Group continues to thrive. With Jennifer’s enthusiasm, David’s support and a room full of smiling faces each week, the group remains a shining example of how music, community and a little courage to try something new can make a real difference in people’s lives.
