A story of trust and connection

In-home support might seem simple to some. Filling shifts, peace of mind and providing practical assistance. Mary’s story is a reminder that behind every roster is a person, and every moment of support is an opportunity to build trust, confidence and connection.

Up until late 2025, Mary was receiving around 27.5 hours of support each month – less than 7hrs per week. The routine worked well for her, helping her maintain independence and confidence in her own home, in the way that she needed.

Earlier this year, everything changed.

Following a hospital stay, Mary’s support needs increased significantly. Suddenly, she was faced with the reality of having many more support workers entering her home and her personal space. For someone who valued routine and familiarity, it was an overwhelming and daunting, but necessary, transition.

Rather than simply increasing hours and filling shifts as quickly as possible, the Outlook team took a different approach. The focus became building upon on a foundation of trust. No one should feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed in their own home.

The team introduced shadow shifts so Mary could meet new workers gradually before relying on them independently. Staff matching became a priority, ensuring support workers were chosen carefully based on personality, communication style and Mary’s comfort level. We listened to Mary’s recommendations and feedback every step of the way.

Today, Mary receives 116.75 hours of support each month, nearly four times her original supports. More importantly, she now looks forward to visits from her support workers, regularly shares positive feedback and has built meaningful relationships with the people supporting her. That’s what it’s all about!

What once felt overwhelming has become a source of confidence, connection and stability.

Mary’s story reflects something we believe strongly at Outlook. Quality support isn’t tasks, shifts and timetables. Quality support is about connection. Showing up with kindness, listening carefully, empowering every individual’s choice & control and creating an environment where people feel safe, respected and genuinely supported.
